Sixteen years ago, the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) scientists warned that genetic engineering is questionable with regards to food safety. Today, 70% of all processed foods contain genetically modified organisms in the United States.

Nine years ago, the UK's government-funded Rowett Institute dismissed the food-safety researchers who told the media that the people are "being used as guinea pigs in a botched laboratory experiment." Research today continues to confirm these risks, with scientific evidence.

Meantime, some interesting products have entered the production pipeline in our food supply. Golden rice — a genetically altered crop — may reduce blindness. Bt-corn, a pesticide-resistent vegetable, is said to reduce chemical spraying and cost. Hardy rice is better suited for a world in the throes of global warming, since it requires less water to grow. Some claim cows yield more and better milk when they are injected with r-BGH hormone, created by plants that have been genetically modified.
